Adam is from the group of puppies that were not introduced to normal life or socialized at a younger age, and only knew his siblings. He has become a huge cuddle bud and does not like it when his humans have to leave the home. He does still startle with sudden movements and loud noises, but is getting more confident every day. He is very playful with other whippets in the home and he can get a little bossy. He has no concept of personal space, therefore other dog(s) in the home would have to be tolerant of him. He does take treats from my hand. It will be important to remember he missed a very important part of socialization to all normal household things during the beginning of his life as they were left to fend for themselves. Curiosity is taking over and we’ve retrieved legos, lip balms, socks from his mouth. It would be good to have chew toys available for him.
He isn’t adverse to the crate anymore so long as a human is still home with him. We’ve had one fluffier bed destroyed, so I would stick with blankets or kryptonite bedding in the crate while working on separation anxiety issues. He’s getting better about letting us know he has to go outside, and actually going out without having to follow another dog on his own. It is good to monitor and make sure he does something, and doesn’t eat poop. We’ve avoided most accidents by staying up on offering potty runs. We haven’t begun to incorporate leash training yet, but with a proper sized martingale, better yet proper harness, I think he will take well with encouragement based on some leash work in the house. Training must start in a fenced yard while working on becoming familiar with sounds and just about everything. He will require a fenced yard, minimum 5 feet tall, privacy preferred, slat width should be less than 4 inches wide.
PLEASE NOTE – WRAP does not ship animals. You must be within a few hours from the Chicagoland area as he was very sheltered, is very nervous, and a flight risk. Touching states would be considered if it was the best home for Adam and the adopter. Adam will not be adopted to a home where there is no other dog, (sighthound preferred) or at least a dog of his size and temperament. Also mandatory is a secured privacy fence as he was never introduced to life in general nor socialized at a younger age and only grew up with his siblings. If you are able to meet Adam’s needs and location, you can submit your application.
